carrier grade router
Carrier-graderouters are extremely powerful routers in carrier networks. They are used by telephone companies and Internet service providers(ISPs) and can process several gigabits per second on multiple channels.
Carrier-grade routers include versions that have multiprocessor systems, which have 32 processor cores. The data throughput is over 20 million data packets per second at a data rate of 16 gigabits per second. Carrier-grade routers have multiple ports for single- mode fiber and for Gigabit Ethernet, slots for Small Outline DIMMs( SODIMM) and many gigabytes of memory.
The router operating system supports various functions such as dynamic routing, firewall, MPLS, virtual private networks, bonding, load balancing and monitoring ofdata streams.
