The cable core consists of the support elements for strain relief, any blind elements and the cores.

The latter are the signal-carrying electrical conductors. These can be symmetrical or, as in the case of coaxial cables, asymmetrical.

Optical waveguides can be centrally routed or stranded in single or multiple layers around a central tension or support element. The connection between the optical fibers and the stranding elements is called the cable core. The cable core is surrounded by the cable sheath or other protective sheaths.
