Business process outsourcing (BPO) is the outsourcing of business processes to external service providers. Such BPO activities can be associated with the aim of reducing costs, as outsourcing standardized and non-business-critical processes allows companies to concentrate on their core businesses.

Standardized outsourcing processes can include employee payroll, invoicing, accounting, and many others. Furthermore, the innovativeness of the external service provider is another aspect of business process outsourcing, as is the quality and improvement of business processes.

In addition to these advantages, there are also business activities of high sensitivity that companies are reluctant to outsource. These include, for example, controlling as well as the management of critical customer data.
