Boot sector viruses, boot sector viruses, overwrite important information for booting so that the operating system can no longer be started. They take over the startup function and the role of the boot routine, replacing the startup in the Master Boot Record and earlier in the Boot Sector on floppy disks. Once a computer is infected, boot sector viruses typically attempt to infect every hard drive accessed in the infected system.

Boot viruses were the most common viruses in the 1990s, they were particularly persistent in that they could also be transferred to floppy disks that did not have a boot sector and could be copied to any floppy disk without being noticed.
