bits per pixel (video) (bpp)
Bits per pixel (bpp) is the number of bits with which a pixel is represented. The number depends on the resolution and is a measure for the color depth.
With 8 bits, a color depth of 256 colors can be represented, a color resolution of 16 bits corresponds to a color representation in High Color with 65,536 colors and 16.7 million color nuances can be represented in True Color with 32 bit resolution.
There are some display techniques that have a color resolution of 36 bits per pixel. These include a variant of HD display with 1,080 lines and a 4K standard from D-Cinema. A further increase of bits per pixel is possible with alpha blending.
