Bipolar means two-pole. Related to the transmission of digital signals, this means that the digital signal is represented by two digital states: Zero and One. The signal levels have positive and negative polarity. Neither polarity corresponds to the level zero. Corresponding signals occur in digital technology but also in coding as in the bipolar process.
- In chip technology, the bipolar technique involves the doping of the semiconductor material. It indicates that there are majority and minority charge carriers in the doping regions which determine the function of the semiconductor devices. To achieve an excess of electrons, the doping regions are doped negatively, and when there is an excess of holes, they are doped positively. Semiconductor technologies that work on this basis are called bipolar.
