binary hexadecimal (binhex)

Binary hexadecimal (BinHex) is a method of converting binary files to ASCII. This conversion is applied to MacIntosh files, for example, so that they can be transferred over networks or attached to e-mails as attachments.

BinHex converts 8-bit characters to ASCII characters for text. On the receiving side, the 7-bit characters must be converted back. Some e-mail clients can do the BinHex encoding and decoding.
