The term Big Brother is borrowed from the novel "1984" by George Orwell. In the society described by Orwell, everyone and their entire private sphere is under observation by the state; Big Brother is watching you. The term Big Brother has accordingly become accepted as an expression for the all-encompassing surveillance by the state apparatus. This refers in particular to all of people's activities on the Internet: personal data left behind on social networks, for example, credit card orders or even certain website visits.

With Big Data, a new trend is emerging in which huge amounts of data are stored, evaluated and analyzed according to specific algorithms in order to determine usage, information and purchasing behavior or to create movement profiles.
