battery policy

Behind EU Directive 2006/66/ EC on batteries and accumulators is a new battery directive that replaces the 15-year-old one. It was adopted by the European Union in 2006 and came into force in September 2008.

The Battery Directive is designed to prevent heavy metals from batteries and accumulators from entering the environment and puts the onus on battery manufacturers and distributors. They are responsible for collecting and recycling old batteries and accumulators. The Battery Directive sets targets for return rates for the various battery types.
