base memory (BASE)

The conventional memory, also called base memory, is the first640 KB of the memory area in a personal computer( PC).

This memory areacontains the DOS-basedprograms that are downloaded from there. Some programs, like Lotus 123 V2.x or WordPerfect 5.1 need sufficient memory of the conventional memory to be able to be operated.

Beside the conventional memory, which plays a role with the Disc Operating System (DOS), there are still the memory extensions Upper Memory Area( UMA), which are used exclusively for the data storage.
