base memory (BASE)

Conventional memory, also called base memory, is the first640 KB of memory area in a personal computer (PC).

This memory area contains the DOS-based programs that are downloaded from it. Some programs, such as Lotus 123 V2.x or WordPerfect 5.1, require sufficient conventional memory to operate.

Besides the conventional memory, which plays a role in the Disc Operating System (DOS), there are also the memory extensions Upper Memory Area (UMA), which are used exclusively for data storage.
