bandwidth allocation protocol (Internet) (BAP)

The Bandwidth Allocation Protocol (BAP) is a dynamic protocol that can be used to scale the bandwidth within a PPP or multilink PPP connection during transmission.

The BAP protocol dynamically scales the bandwidth during transmission by determining the bandwidth requirement of a connection via control packets exchanged between the stations and adding a corresponding number of channels. The associated Bandwidth Allocation Control Protocol( BACP), on the other hand, distributes the available bandwidth among the applications.

The BAP protocol was specified by the Internet Engineering Task Force( IETF) and is described in RFC 2125.
