backspace (control character) (BS)
The format control character (FE0) Backspace ( BS) triggers a backward movement of the writing device by one writing step.
This backspace occurs within one line. Standard keyboards have a key, the backspace key, to perform a backspace. The BS control character has position 08(H) in the ASCII character set.
In video, the term backspace is used for a cut operation. In this editing technique, the magnetic tape is stopped for the cut and pulled back slightly. This technique is not frame-accurate, but it provides for uninterrupted video recording.
