autonomous system boundary router (ASBR)

An Autonomous System Boundary Router (ASBR) is located between autonomous OSPF systems, Open Shortest Path First, and autonomous systems( AS). The ASBR router supports the OSPF protocol and another routing protocol, such as Routing Information Protocol( RIP).

In addition to the Autonomous System Boundary Router (ASBR), other routers with dedicated functions, the Designated Router( DR) and Area Border Router( ABR), are used with the OSPF protocol.
