Automatic Number Identification (ANI) is a feature of dial-up networks.

This automatic number identification can be a number or device directory. The ANI code is used to calculate the cost of individual connections, as it identifies the calling subscriber. The ANI number is normally part of the address information and is used by the network operator to bill the costs, but it can also be used as a callback number.
