audio return channel (HDMI) (ARC)

In order to reduce the cabling effort between different HDMI components(High Definition Multimedia Interface), an audio return channel, Audio Return Channel( ARC), is implemented in the HDMI 1.4 version.

Like the HEC channel (HDMI Ethernet Channel), the audio return channel runs over the HDMI cable that is present anyway. Via this return channel, the sound can be transmitted from one HDMI unit directly to another, virtually downstream from the set-top box, receiver or TV to the audio system.

All audio file formats that are also transmitted via the Sony/Philips Digital Interface (S/PDIF) can be transmitted via the audio return channel. These include Dolby Digital, Digital Theatre Sound and PCM audio. There are some audio formats that are not supported by the audio return channel.
