audibility

Speech communication between two or more communication partners is expressed in terms of intelligibility, as is audiophonic speech transmission via radio or in rooms with sound.

  1. Intelligibility is a characteristic value of audio and telephone technology that includes speech intelligibility and syllable intelligibility. Audio technology also uses the terms transparency and clarity. The interpretation of intelligibility is service-specific. For example, intelligibility is already achieved when the transmission technology provides sufficient speech and syllable intelligibility, which is sufficiently affected by delay times, bit error rates, echoes and jitter. With the MOS value, telephone voice communication has an instrument for evaluating speech quality.
  2. In contrast to speech intelligibility in communication technology, intelligibility in rooms exposed to sound is affected by reflections, absorptions and reverberations. These frequency-dependent factors affect speech intelligibility, which is significantly improved by reflections up to 50 ms. Reflections arriving less than 50 ms after the direct signal contribute to clarity. In addition to clarity, room acoustics also knows the term clarity. There are several methods for a qualitative evaluation of speech intelligibility: the Speech TransmissionIndex( STI), the Rapid Speech Transmission Index ( RASTI), the Articulation Index( AI), the Speech Intelligibility Index( SII) and ALcons.
