aramid fiber

Aramid yarn is a polyamide that is arranged around optical fiber bundles and serves as strain relief to protect the optical fibers.

Because of the exceptionally small diameter and the associated low mechanical stress, optical fibers are generally grouped together in bundles.

Aramid yarn around a polymer fiber

Several optical fibers, each surrounded by an opaque core sheath, are grouped around a mechanically stable, fully dielectric, thick core and then, before the outer sheath is applied, are braided with a braid of Kevlar aramid fibers.
