AS/400 was a midrange computer from IBM introduced in 1988, replacing the classic System/36 and System/38 series, which still used the Basic Telecommunications Access Method( BTAM).

In the SNA architecture, AS/400 computers formed the Physical Unit( PU 2.1) and through the System Application Architecture( SAA), they provided unified application, user, developer and communication support. The operating system of AS/400 is OS/400. AS/400 can be equipped with several terabytes of data storage and a Java Virtual Memory, and was intended to replace PC servers and web servers in the business world.

In addition to the above applications, AS/400 can also be used in the data warehouse to store corporate data because of its several gigabytes of memory. Furthermore, for the development of application programs under Java, for web services and e-commerce and for corporate groupware.

Although the further developed AS/400 computers were renamed iSeries in 2000, the name AS/400 is still used.
