Application Layer and Application Process

Application service elements are divided into general and special service elements. Common application layer service elements, which comprise the aspects of application processes relevant for communication by an application instance, ensure the coordination of other subprotocols with the user program, independent of specific user functions. These common service elements are called common application service elements (CASE). Unlike Application Service Elements (ASE), CASE supports common application services.

The special application service elements are called Specific Application Service Elements (SASE) and are tailored to specific standardized applications.
