animation

With reference to ITWissen.info, animations are computer-aided 2D and 3D representations in which dynamically moving graphics, texts or representations form a temporally coordinated sequence.

In contrast to animated films, animations are computer-based. They are characterized by the continuous, sporadic or erratic highlighting and changing of motion sequences in graphics, the changing of graphic details, fonts or texts. Continuous motion sequences of people, animals, objects, or areas are achieved by stringing together frames or individual graphics in which successive frames show slight changes from the previous graphic. However, continuous motion sequences required a playback sequence of at least 24 individual graphics or images to give the animations a temporally continuous flow. Animations can dynamically represent functional sequences, just like presentations, and thus support recognition of motion sequences and learning ability.

Animations consist of a sequence of individual images with different image content, viewing angles, size representations, color changes and many other graphic aspects. They simplify spatially and temporally abstract representations, can be controlled synchronously with audio vision, and require much less bandwidth for information transfer than a video display.

The step-by-step transition from a source image to a target image, morphing, can be classified as animation.
