To increase the functional density of analog circuits, general-purpose analog ICs have been developed for general-purpose applications to provide the desired functionality through external circuitry.

These analog ICs are high frequency amplifiers and low frequency amplifiers, differential amplifiers, operational amplifiers and power amplifiers, comparators and sample and hold (S/H) circuits, voltage regul ators and A/D converters, actuator circuits and sensor circuits, optocouplers and regulators, and many more.

The manufacturing technology is the same as that of the digital integrated circuit, but the parameterization possibilities of the analog ICs are significantly more variable in terms of gain and attenuation, phase and frequency response, input imp edance and output impedance or delay times due to the external circuitry.
