advanced optical disc (AOD)
The Advanced Optical Disc (AOD) is comparable to the Blu-Ray disc. The specifications for the AOD, which has changed its name to HD-DVD, were developed by Toshiba and NEC.
Like the Blu-Ray disc, the AOD disc also uses a blue laser that has a wavelength of 405 nm and an aperture of 0.7. Like the other DVDs, it is double-sided with two layers on each side. The storage capacity for the rewritable version is 20 GB/side, the layer thickness 0.6 mm.
In order to compress the huge data volumes of high-definition video, HDTV, The AOD Disc relies on the H.264 and WMV9 codecs.
