Calibration is the adjustment of a measuring instrument or measuring system with respect to its error tolerances and the minimization of the display error.

During the adjustment process, the measuring device is set so that it does not exceed the specified error limits. This gauge adjustment is performed after calibration if the specified tolerances are not met.

The adjustment is connected with a changing intervention in the measuring device. After the adjustment, which is described in DIN 1319-1, the measuring device is in a ready-to-operate state and complies with the specified error tolerances.
