address register (AR)

An address register( AR) is a register of the central processing unit( CPU) for the storage of addresses.

Such a register is located between data bus and address bus and calculates the memory addresses of operands and instructions. For the reception of the address part of an operand, the data bus fetches the address from the main memory during the execution of a program instruction and stores it in the address register. With this address a memory cell can be addressed via the address bus. The operands stored in the working memory are addressed via the address register.
