address generation unit (CPU) (AGU)

An Address Generation Unit (AGU) is a component in microprocessors that calculates the actual memory address.

The AGU address is used to address the operands for an operation in memory. The Address Generation Unit operates independently of other microprocessor units.

The AGU unit is divided into two parts, each of which is a separate but identical Address Arithmetic Logic Unit (Address ALU). These are in turn divided into several groups of three and address registers. Each AGU unit consists of a full adder and an offset adder that can perform additions and subtractions.
