Acoustics is the study of sound, psychoacoustics its perception by humans.

The term acoustics is derived from the Greek word "akouein". Acoustics deals with the generation and propagation of sound and its technical applications. It describes the propagation of mechanical vibrations and waves in solid, liquid and gaseous media and the interaction between different materials.

As a technology, acoustics has found its way into the sound reinforcement of rooms, halls and stadiums, as well as in mechanical engineering, construction and automotive engineering in the measurement of sounds and noise levels, in the recording and reproduction of sound, and in psychoacoustics in the evaluation of sounds. The spectrum of acoustics can be divided into sound generation, recording and measurement as well as radiation.
