access control system (ACS)

Access control systems are security systems that on the one hand control physical access to buildings, rooms and IT systems, and on the other hand regulate access rights to resources, data and files.

Access control systems can be divided into those that serve Mandatory Access Control (MAC) and regulate access in an obligatory manner, whereas with Discretionary Access Control (DAC) the user alone determines the access authorization of third parties. In addition, there is Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) with a role-based approach, Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC) and Policy-Based Access Control (PBAC) with a rule-based approach.

Access control systems work with authorization and the assignment of access rights, typically via passwords, personal identification numbers(PIN), biometric data such as fingerprint recognition, voice recognition and electronic keys.
