The term "Above the Fold" comes from newspaper technology. In relation to the web, Above the Fold refers to the part of a web page that appears in the browser window after the web page has loaded. This part can be viewed directly by the user without having to scroll the web page.
The term Above the Fold is therefore relevant for search engine optimization (SEO), because search results listed in the visible part of the results page (SERP) attract more attention and are therefore clicked on more often than search results that only appear when scrolling. In search result displays, the first five search results are Above the Fold.
The part of the web page that is not visible when first viewed and can only be displayed by scrolling is called "Below the Fold".
