uniform naming convention (Windows 2000) (UNC)

Uniform Naming Convention (UNC) or Universal Naming Convention (UNC) is a naming convention used to identify resources on a computer or network.

The UNC convention forms the path in a computer, network or file system over which the resources are reached. A prerequisite for the use of the resources is their prior sharing so that users or other computer systems can access them. The UNC path has a unified naming convention characterized by backslashes and components and has the following scheme: \> server>\. The two backslashes indicate the beginning of the directory path followed by the directory on the server. Such a path might look like this: \itwissen\database\definition\unc.txt.
