WiFi positioning system (WPS)

The WiFi Positioning System(WPS) is a system for indoor navigation of subscribers in WLANs. It works similarly to the positioning methods used in GSM networks and uses the access points( AP) and beacons, which are miniature transmitters with low transmission power, and their known coordinates as geographical reference coordinates.

The WPS system can be deployed in cities. Here, the WPS devices measure the field strength of the various access points and determine the distance and position of the WPS receiver based on a database in which all access points are entered with their coordinate values. Depending on the access point density, the position accuracy is well below 5 m.

Among WLAN-based navigation and positioning systems, there is another approach, the WLAN Positioning System (WPS).
