WAN accelerator

A WAN accelerator is a network appliance that accelerates data throughput in wide area networks. In general, the data throughput depends on the data rate and the data volume. If you increase one or both of these parameters, you increase the data throughput.

WAN accelerators, on the other hand, work with the methods of data reduction, compression and deduplication. If the data is compressed more or redundant data or files are sorted out, the effect is the same: Data throughput increases. Therefore, WAN accelerators save by caching files or parts of files and then referencing them, thus filtering out redundant data. The result is increased data throughput. Other approaches for optimizing network connections and increasing data throughput are the WAN Optimization Controller(WOC) and the Application Delivery Controller( ADC).
