VoIP gateway

A VoIP gateway is a network component in VoIP networks. Such a gateway has a pure translation function and converts analog and digital telephone lines from telephone companies to Internet telephony (VoIP) and vice versa.

A VoIP gateway is needed when a telephone customer wants to use a traditional telephone line for Internet telephony.

A VoIP gateway converts the telecommunications interfaces into VoIP interfaces through which it can operate telephones and mobile devices. The gateway interfaces can be used for external controllers such as gatekeepers or softswitches, for network management and billing management. VoIP gateway functions include compression and decompression, routing for voice switching, and packetization.
