Video-8

Video-8 is a video recording system that was to be established as the video recording standard in consumer electronics in the mid-1980s, supported by over 100 companies.

Video-8 was developed by Sony and is characterized by its more compact format of video cassettes, video recording and playback equipment compared to VHS. The name refers to the width of the magnetic tape of 8 mm. The video tape is contained in a video cassette, which has dimensions of 95 x 62.5 x 15 mm, to protect it from damage.

Video 8 has the same limitations as VHS with respect to the different TV standards, PAL, NTSC and SECAM, which means that Video 8 recordings are only compatible in the same TV standard.

Video-8 records picture information using the helical-scan method with two video heads offset by 180°. A control track is recorded longitudinally at the top magnetic tape edge and an audio track is recorded at the bottom tape edge, also longitudinally. In the video skew track, the luminance signal (Y) and the chrominance signal (C) are stored in frequency multiplex. The track width is 34 µm for PAL and 20 µm for NTSC. The luminance signal has a carrier frequency of 4.8 MHz and a frequency deviation of +/- 600 kHz, the carrier frequency of the chrominance signal is 732.4 kHz, the frequency deviation is +/- 500 kHz. The audio recording, which can also be two- channel, is also in FM at 1.5 MHz. The tape speed is 20.05 mm/s.

The Hosiden plug is used as the connector. An improved version of Video-8 is Hi8, which uses separated video. The further development of both systems is Digital-8, which records digital video.
