VP8-Videocodec

VP8 is a video codec developed by On2 Technologies for lossy compression ofvideo. VP8 is a further development of the VP video codecs to which VP5 and VP7 also belong and which is continued with VP9.

The VP8 video codec was adopted by Google and is available for download license-free under the Berkeley Software Distribution( BSD). The codec is especially suitable for the Internet and builds on the Matroska Video( MKV) and WebM container formats. The audio compression is done by Ogg Vorbis. VP8 is comparable to H.264/ AVC in terms of compression behavior. However, the VP8 decoder is slower than the H.264/AVC video codec. The video quality depends on the profile used. At the lowest profile, the two video codecs are judged to be equal in quality; at higher bit rates, the H.265/AVC video codec is said to be superior to the VP8 in quality. However, the VP8 requires more storage space at comparable quality.

The VP8 video codec is used, among other things, in browsers for web-basedreal-time communication, Web Real Time Communication(WebRTC).
