Unix file system (UFS)

In the Unix file system(UFS), all files are arranged in a single directory tree. The files can be data, directories or also drives, which are represented in the directory tree in the same form.

In the current USF version (UFS2) file systems of over 1 TB are supported, in addition it offers the possibility with Snapshots the current conditions of the file system to hold. In case of a system crash a check of the file system is executed in the background.

The Unix file system is hierarchically structured in the form of a family tree, whereby the individual hierarchy levels of the UFS directory are symbolized by a slash (/). Examples: /users, /lib.

The UFS file system is used in various derivatives of the Berkeley Software Distribution( BSD), such as FreeBSD and OpenBSD, but also in the Solaris and Mac OS X operating systems and under Linux.
