The switched broadband network

was an experimental network installed in the 1980's. The precursor broadband network, launched on February 23, 1989, was later called the "switched broadband network". The VBN provided 1,000 network connections at 140 Mbit/s in industrial centers from Munich to Hamburg and in Berlin for the testing of broadband individual communication services. The self-dialing network can be used for videoconferencing, telemedicine, telepublishing and high-speed computer interconnection. It was operated by Deutsche Telekom and discontinued in the 1990s.
