SAE class

Inautomotive technology, the Society of Automotive Engineers(SAE) has divided the different requirements for automotive communication systems into SAE classes. It distinguishes between SAE class "A", which supports sensor and actuator applications, SAE class "B" for body electronics, and SAE class "C" for drive and chassis control.

The individual SAE classes are characterized by different data rates and access methods and are represented by specific fieldbuses.

SAE class "A" represents the sensor and actuator networks, which operate at relatively low data rates. These are around 20 kbit/s. Typical fieldbuses for these applications are the LIN bus and the TTP/A bus standardized by the OMG.

SAE class "B" stands for body and automotive electronics with data rates of up to 500 kbit/s. This SAE class is dominated by the CAN bus (CAN-B). And requirements of SAE class "C", which include the drive and chassis, the engine, transmission, steering, brakes, etc., are met by the CAN-C protocols.
