PyQt

PyQt is a toolkit that supports the creation of graphical user interfaces( GUI) using the Pythonprogramming language. Due to its generally frequent use, it is now part of the Python scope of delivery. Possible further alternatives are among other things Tkinter, PyGTK or wxPython.

The Linux desktopKDE is also based on its own GUI toolkit, the so-called Qt. It was developed by the company Trolltech and was originally under a proprietary license. In the meantime, however, one only has to purchase a commercial license for programs that are not themselves distributed under the Generic Public License( GPL). Nevertheless, discussions about licensing issues have severely limited the widespread use of Qt in the past, even though the library can be considered one of the most modern and feature-rich available today and Qt supports numerous platforms. It is precisely the scope of the library and the many possibilities that may make it difficult for beginners to get an initial overview.

There is also a mature connection to Python available for Qt in the form of PyQT. Ultimately, the decision between PyGTK and PyQt is often a matter of taste and, under Linux, also depends on which desktop a program should best integrate into.
