MultiGig plug-in connector

In the high- performance versions of the VME bus, the plug-in boards are connected with a MultiGig RT2 connector.

This is a 7-row connector with up to 728 signal lines. These can be split into 160 differential serial links, each with a bandwidth of 6.25 GHz. In addition, a complete parallel VME bus can be operated.

The MultiGig technology does not use pins and sockets, but instead uses small printed circuit boards with tracks and rows of contacts. This allows the connectors to be populated in different ways as needed. For high-speed connections, the impedances of the lines and the propagation times of the signals in the connector are adjusted.
