MOS controlled thyristor (MCT)

Like the GTO th yristor, the MCT thyristor( MOS Controlled Thyristor) is a thyristor switch developed from the GTO thyristor.

The GTO thyristor requires more extensive control electronics for the relatively high control current at turn-off. This disadvantage is remedied by the MCT thyristor, which is switched on and off by a voltage pulse via MOSFETs. In the on-state, MCTs have low losses and can switch high currents of over a thousand amps at voltages of several thousand volts.

MCT thyristors are comparable to Silicon Controlled Rectifiers(SCRs) with an isolated gate, which greatly simplifies the control electronics for the driver circuits. Due to the MOSFET drive, they have a higher switching speed than SCRs.
