Lion

Mac OS X Lion or Mac OS X 10.7 is an operating system from Apple Inc. for notebooks and desktop computers of the Apple Macintosh series. Major innovations are the adoption of functions of the Apple iPad and the integration of the Mac App Store for downloading additional software. Also new is "Mission Control", it combines the features already known from previous versions of Mac OS X Exposé, Dashboard and Spaces and displays all applications and windows that are currently open.

Gesture control of the user interface

Launchpad, which has a look similar to the iPhone and iPad home screens, lets you view, sort into directories, and launch existing apps for the Macintosh in a full-screen layout. You can switch between several windows or to the desktop with a swipe gesture. Apple Mail also received a new interface with full-screen layout. Starting with Mac OS X 10.7, the Mail client automatically arranges messages to and from a Mail contact in a timeline.

The multitouch gestures have also been adopted from Apple's iPad tablet. With the new "Pinch-to-Zoom" motion, you can scroll to the next or previous page, switch from one app to another, or open Mission Control with a swipe gesture. The AirDrop feature wirelessly copies data between multiple Macintosh computers without network preferences. Versions automatically creates incremental backups of documents in chronological order during editing, similar to the Time Machine backup software. An Auto Save function also allows users to access older editing phases while working.

With Resume, all apps that were open before a Macintosh computer was shut down are loaded to the old state when the computer is restarted. A new version of the hard drive utility FileVault enables full-disk encryption of local and external hard drives and securely erases data on a Macintosh from later access.

OS X Lion also supports Microsoft Exchange 2010, and Mac OS X Lion Server can be configured to administer devices running Mac OS X, the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. For the first time, the Mac App Store is also integrated into the Mac OS X 10.7 operating system, from which apps for the Macintosh can be ordered and downloaded. Once an app is downloaded from the Mac App Store, it is automatically installed in Launchpad.

The new features of Mac OS X 10.7 such as Full Screen, Gestures, Versions and Auto Save are also available to independent developers for their own apps. With "HiDPI Display" modules, user interface elements in multiple resolutions can be incorporated into an app. On higher- resolution displays, the elements are displayed in the same size as with a lower resolution.
