LaTeX

LaTeX is a text-based file format. It consists of TeX, a text typesetting language that was later extended with macro instructions and renamed LaTeX. LaTeX dates back to the 1980s, when typesetters used specialized languages to describe typesetting instructions for text, font, font size and boldness, sentence width and alignment, bleed-through and letter spacing, layout, and more.

TeX and LaTeX also allow mathematical formulas to be represented, but not semantically interpreted, processed, and indexed as with MathML. It is extremely flexible and independent of operating systems and computers.

TeX, which impresses with its high font quality and perfection, has simplified typesetting technology, but cannot yet offer What You See Is What You Get ( WYSIWYG). TeX, which has been extended to include macro commands, LaTeX, continues to work with formatting commands and with curly brackets containing the content that a command encloses.

LaTeX files can be created among other things with the script language Graphics Layout Engine( GLE). They have the suffix *.tex as extension and can be converted to Postscript via Device Independent Print File( DVI) or other programs.
