KVM over IP (KVMoIP)

KVM over IP (KVMoIP) stands for remote control of keyboard, video and computer mouse using IP protocol. With KVM over IP, the administrator can access and administer the clients and servers from anywhere. He can use the Internet or other networks that work with the TCP/IP protocol for his KVM connection.

In the case of classic KVM, the operability is limited in the sense that it refers to the local area. This is due to the fact that the keyboard, monitor and mouse are connected to the KVM switch. It is different with KVM over IP. The keyboard, monitor and computer mouse are not directly connected to the KVM switch, but to an IP KVM unit that communicates with the KVM switch over IP networks. The KVM switch transmits the screen display to the remote client and, in the reverse direction, input commands from the keyboard or mouse. These three functions - the screen display, keyboard and mouse input - can be used to remotely control the connected computers and servers from any workstation without immediate physical access.

KVM operation has the advantage that remote operation also works when computers are booted, and that the BIOS can also be accessed via KVM.

To prevent unauthorized access, the administrator must authenticate himself and the KVM over IP transmission must be encrypted.
