Jolla

Jolla is a smartphone operating system from the Finnish Jolla Ltd. in Helsinki. The company was founded in July 2012 by former Nokia employees and external investors.

Jolla is a continuation of the MeGoo operating system, an amalgamation of Maemo and Moblin from 2010, which was supported by Nokia but abandoned in the fall of 2011. Nokia had launched only one smartphone with MeeGo, the June 2011 Nokia N9, and decided to implement Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system in its own smartphones in February 2011.

MeeGo was a Linux-based operating system for smartphones, tablets and netbooks, which was the result of a collaboration between Nokia and Intel. Jolla contains elements of MeeGo, including the Mer Core and Qt, as well as a user interface developed by Jolla. Jolla thus competes with the MeeGo successor Tizen, which is pushed by Samsung and Intel.
