Jliet format

The Joliet format, developed by Microsoft, is an ISO 9660file name extension. Joliet, which uses the 16-bit Unicode character set, provides long file names for storing data on a CD-ROM.

Joliet allows file names of up to 64 characters or even 255 characters and facilitates file transfer between DOS, Windows and Macintosh operating systems and Unix. The Joliet file naming convention is not subject to the DOS operating system's 8.3 naming convention, where the file name is 8 characters and the file type(extension) is 3 characters, but can read them. Joliet is used in CD-ROMs in the various Windows operating systems that support long file names.
