Java runtime environment (JRE)

The JavaRuntime Environment (JRE) is a runtime environment that is required to run Java programs. It essentially contains a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and the basic libraries required for execution. Development tools such as the compiler are not part of the Java Runtime Environment but of the Java Development Kit (JDK).
