Java runtime environment (JRE)

The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is a runtime environment that is required to run Java programs. It essentially contains a Java Virtual Machine( JVM) and the basic libraries required for execution. Tools required for development, such as the compiler, are not part of the Java Runtime Environment but of the Java Development Kit( JDK).
