Internet security association and key management protocol (IPsec) (ISAKMP)

Internet Security Association and Key Management Protocol (ISAKMP) is used to manage and update cryptographic keys. It was developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force( IETF) and Cisco.

The actual ISAKMP protocol is called Internet Key Exchange( IKE) and provides authentication and encryption forIP transmission. The IKE protocol describes a two- phase scenario in which a fairly simple communication relationship is first established in the form of a Security Association( SA). The Security Association defines only a single connection with comparatively weak security mechanisms, which is used to secure and authenticate further management operations. In the second phase, concrete Security Associations are negotiated and established for the respective security protocols to be used. The required keys are also generated in this phase.

The Internet Security Association and Key Management Protocol was specified by the IETF and is described in RFC 2408.
