IV-IV compound semiconductor

In addition to conventional semiconductors made of germanium or silicon, there are compound semiconductors that consist of two semiconductor materials. These compound semiconductors are designated according to the main groups of the periodic table from which the semiconductors originate.

Important main groups are group III with the chemical elements boron (B), aluminum (Al), gallium ( Ga) and indium(In), as well as group IV with the elements and semiconductors carbon (C), silicon ( Si), germanium ( Ge) and tin (Sn) and group V with nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), arsenic ( As) and antimony (Sb). Most compound semiconductors are made from these main groups. They are therefore called IV-IV and III-V compound semiconductors.

The IV-IV compound semiconductors also include silicon germanium( SiGe), from which much faster transistors can be made than from conventional silicon.
