IP over ATM (IPoA)

IP over ATM (IPoA), more precisely: IP and ARP over ATM, is a transmission technology that combines different protocols. There is the IP protocol with the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP), which is transmitted over ATM.

In the IPoA technique, which is not standardized and is described in RFC 1577 from 1994, the communication partners must have an ATM address and an IP address. The ATM network serves as a transmission network between the communication partners. Logical IP subnets, Logical IP Subnet( LIS), are set up on the ATM network, which behave like IP subnets. The ARP protocol is used to convert IP addresses into ATM addresses.
