802.20 is based on 802.16a and supports mobility. It operates at frequencies of 3.5 GHz and is said to achieve data rates of16 Mbit/s in the uplink and 3.2 Mbit/s in the downlink, from vehicles traveling at speeds of up to 250 km/h.

The 802.20 standard relies consistently on IP infrastructure, enabling much simpler architectures than conventional cellular networks. In802.10 networks, IP services are provided directly by an access router. The concept is ideally suited for applications with mobile IP.

Because standardization was dominated by one company, the activities of the 802.20 working group were discontinued at the end of 2006.
